COWLSO 2021: FOWOSO members, other Nigerian women assemble in Lagos to deliberate gender, national issues

The Foundation for Wives of Ondo State Officials and Female Political Appointees, FOWOSO, chaired by the First Lady of the State, Chief(Mrs) Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, today joined their fellow women across Nigeria to participate in the ongoing National Women’s Conference in Lagos state.

The Ondo First Lady was represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Gender Research and Documentation at the event, Mrs Temitope Daniyan, who led the State’s delegates to participate in the conference which was organised by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, COWLSO, where women were charged, through various lectures to ‘AWAKE’ to their roles in building good families and in promoting good governance.

The 21st National Women’s Conference with the theme ‘AWAKE’, holds at the Eko Convention Center of Eko hotels and Suites Victoria Island, Lagos State.

Declaring the conference opened, the Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, who was the Special Guest of honour at the event, noted that the history of Nigeria is full of heroic deeds of women, noting that no reasonable society confines women to the back seat and still expect progress.

Governor Akeredolu, who affirmed that men create perpetual domination in Africa society, encouraged women to embrace politics beyond jamboree, saying they’re good leaders whose roles should surpass praise-singing at political functions.

The COWLSO 2021 Special Guest of honour described women as pillars of support whose freedom shouldn’t be limited, while charging them not to compromise their husbands’ integrities through their conducts.

In her remarks, the First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs Aisha Buhari who commended the past and the present First Ladies of Lagos state for sustaining COWLSO, enjoined all Nigerian women in politics to apply their motherly experiences and help men to facilitate greater decisions-making for the betterment of children and the nation at large.

Represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Women Affairs and Administration, Dr. Rukayat Gore, the Nigeria’s First Lady implored other States’ First Ladies to adopt the conference while describing it as unique and inspirational; saying Lagos state has set a pace for wives of government’s officials.

She also appealed to Nigerian men to provide their wives with needed support, especially on family matters.

Earlier in her welcome address, the First Lady of Lagos State and Chairperson of COWLSO, Dr Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, had hinted that COWLSO, which was initiated in 1974 by Late Mrs Funmilayo Mobolaji Johnson, laid to rest for some years and rekindled by the wife of the First Lagos state civilian Governor, Alhaja Jakande in 1999 is a platform for women to come together and share experiences about women-related issues, children and the development of the nation.

She noted that the conference would provide insightful recommendations that would result to actionable initiatives for the development of Nigeria.

The day one of the conference covered lectures on, ‘Work Life Integration: A Process not a destination’, ‘Substance Abuse, Youth Restiveness, Child Molestation- The Fallouts of a Failed Family System’, and ‘Cervical and Breast Cancer: All there is to know’.

It also featured a playlet on the dilemma of a girl child in a partriachal society, which served as a clarion call for women to raise their voices in support of girl-child related issues; and presentation of Inspirational Women awards.

Some notable dignitaries in attendance included, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo, his deputy, Babafemi Hamzat and his wife Remi; the Wives of the Governors of Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, Kwara, Fmr Lagos State First Lady Mrs Abimbola Jakande, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable development, Princess Adejoke Orelope, Secretary to the Government of Ondo State, Princess Oladuni Odu, Wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Salamatu Gbajabiamila, Wives of the Chief of Army Staff and the Inspector General of Police; among others.
