Muslim women leaders have been urged to update and upgrade their knowledge through the use of internet to checkmate the vices that run at variance to social norms and values within a society and the country at large.
A lecturer from the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Dr. Sidiqat Adamson gave the advice while delivering a lecture at the inauguration of Akoko North west local Government Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations of Nigeria (FOMWAN) held at Ogbagi Akoko.
The lecturer who spoke on the title: “The impact of Leadership and Good governance as Panacea to the social media vices in the 21st century”, said it was expedient for leaders to quickly adapt to the changing ethical, social, and environmental standards to be ICT compliant.
She raised the need to keep abreast of the concept of leadership which she noted entails fostering change and inherently value-based while working as a team.
Adamson characterised good governance as being participatory, transparent, accountable, effective and equitable to maintain and promote the rule of law.
She said Government could instruct the platform companies to protect online users from contents that involve or promote actions like child abuse, violence, cyberbullying etc.
She called on the NGOs, parents/teachers including the youths and individuals to join the power of social media to raise fund, share reliable and accurate information including high quality training/learning.
According to her, Social media is an all encompassing and inexpensive tool of the modern life which she said has come to stay considering the fact that the use of ICT/social media/internet are not harmful in themselves, but important to make judicious use of it without being carried away by its vanities.
In her message, the state Amirah, Alhaja Aminat Abibullahi Akinpelumi charged the new leaders to be good leaders and to build on the lecture for others to emulate them.
Akinpelumi who noted that the association has been in the fore front of women and the children development to ensure good family relationship in the society, charged members to ensure doing the needful in all their collaborative efforts with relevant organisations as she said that iNEC has requested their participation in electioneering procedures in the country.
Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Yusuf Gafar, who is the principal of Hamadiyyah Grammar School Ogbagi Akoko, applauded the association for living up to expectations.
He urged the new leaders to work in unity and ensure meeting the goals to keep the flag flying.
Prior to the Inauguration day, other leadership training held centered around the role of leaders, characteristics of leaders, equipping a society spiritually and Team work to achieve success.
In her acceptance speech on behalf of the new leadership in Akoko, the Amirah, Alhaja Serifat Sanni expressed their readiness to work in unity and to abide by what they have learnt at the lecture to move the association forward better than they met it.
Present at the occasion is the Alafin of Afin, Chief Imam of Ogbagi Akoko Alhaji Adamson Jamiu, Chief Imam of Arigidi Akoko, Alhaji Ibrahim Kilani among majority of others.
