The National Leader of the Pan Yoruba Socio- Political Group, Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, stepped down from his position on Tuesday, as a result of old age.
Fasoranti, who conveyed this decision to members of the group at the March edition of their monthly meeting held in his house at Akure, the Ondo state capital, named Afenifere’s Deputy Leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo as the Acting National Leader.
The 95-year-old Fasoranti, also appointed the group’s former Financial Secretary, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, the Alaago of Kajola Ago, Atakumosa East Council area, Ilesa, Osun state, as the Deputy Leader.
Pa Fasoranti became the Afenifere leader in the year 2008, following the demise of Pa Abraham Adesanya, the then National Leader.
Speaking at the meeting attended by the immediate past governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, Dr Kunle Olajide, Senator Iyiola Omisoore, Basorun Seinde Arogbofa, Chief Kole Omololu, Chief Femi Aluko and Korede Duyile, Pa Fasoranti said his stepping down became necessary because the Yoruba race needed an agile person to lead, due to the crisis bedeviling the country.
He noted that the development became necessary as the group needs more than ever before to have an improved organisation with more effective approach to combat the monstrous invasion of “our culture and pride as a people.”
Fasoranti pointed out in his speech that since 2008 when he took over as the leader, Afenifere had faced massive unrest launched against the Yoruba people by those who sought to emasculate it by using all manner of negativity and influence.
According to him: “The governments at home have fearfully expanded the economic and social strangulation of our land through the invasion of murderous herders who destroy our farms, rape and kill our people both as an economic and political instrument of subjugation.
“The stubborn determination by a section of the North in power to continue running Nigeria through a defective structural arrangement manipulated and dominated by the North to the disadvantage of the South through a fraudulent and unacceptable constitution.
“Afenifere now needs more than ever before to have an improved organization with a more effective approach to issues.
“Only a more agile and active leadership can achieve this. At 95, I am hardly able to provide such and so it is time for me to step aside.”
