It was an atmosphere of celebration galore in Auga-Akoko area of Ondo State yesterday, when the wife of the State governor, Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu stormed the community with gifts for the aged, pregnant women, and mothers of triplets.
In an all-encompassing visit, which its primary purpose was the distribution of educational materials to school children for the Back-to-School initiative of the First Lady, the event, planned to be a low key, turned out to become a festival as the people described it as first of its kind in the history of the community.
The aged people took turns out to receive packaged gifts from the First Lady, while pregnant women received the delivery kits, tagged SOLAYO, another initiative of Mrs. Akeredolu, which so many women have benefited from across the state.
It didn’t end there, at the Palace of the Alauga of Auga, packs of NAN baby’s food, pampers, and cash gift of N50,000 each were handed over to the wife of the local government chairman to be given to some mothers in the area who recently gave birth to Triplet.
Some elders who benefited from the First Lady’s gift, Mrs. Nimota Olowo, and Mrs. Emily Arijeniwa, said they were delighted to have received such recognition from Mrs. Akeredolu, noting that since the creation of Ondo State, no wife of the governor had stepped into the community.
They, however, expressed optimism that her visit will ushers in development to Auga community, and also used the opportunity to appeal to the governor to approve Auga Local Community Development Area.
Also, the pregnant women couldn’t hide their joy. Mrs. Mariam Saheed, Mrs. Abbey Bosede, and Mrs. Ibrahim Nolatu, were grateful for the Solayo kits they received; and prayed that God grant the initiator the grace to touch more lives.
Mrs. Akeredolu was later led to the moribund Cattle Ranch in the community where she was informed that the ranch was set up in 2011, but faced maintenance problem which led to its collapse shortly after the establishment.
Having heard that the Ranch occupies about 4,000 hectares of land, the wife of the governor noted that if it is revived, the community would be bubbling economically, and kidnapping issue in the area would end.
