Report from Akoko area of Ondo State indicates that Soldiers of the Nigerian Army deployed to a roadblock between Akungba and Ikare Akoko have allegedly raped a 300 level Student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA).
Newsmen exclusively gathered that the female student, Folake (not real name) was asked to alight from a taxi while coming from the school on Wednesday by the soldiers on duty yesterday’s evening.
The soldiers were alleged to have ordered the girl into their mini barracks located beside the road on Ikare-Akungba Akoko around 6:00pm and directed her friends and other commuters inside the taxi to leave the spot.
According to one of the victim’s friends told our correspondent that, “out of fear we left the place, hoping that she (Folake) will be released immediately but she was not released until one hour later after she was allegedly serially raped by the soldiers.”
“We went to Ikare police station to report the incident and rushed her to Ondo state Specialist Hospital, Ikare-Akoko for examination and treatment as am talking to you, she is at the hospital and doctors confirmed that she was raped.”
The friend lamented, “this is not the first time such thing will happen at place, but commuters who are usually students who live in Ikare will be asexually harassed especially in the evenings. The soldiers will be using their hands to press our breasts while inside agolo (taxi).”
The parents of the raped girl who were still in shock as at Wednesday’s night at the hospital, couldn’t grant interview but were looking angry and worried.
An uncle to the victim, also confirmed the incident.
When Contacted on phone, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Ondo state Specialist Hospital, Ikare, Dr Olawale Oguntuase confirmed that the lady was brought to the hospital on Wednesday’s night for treatment.
Dr Oguntuase however said result of medical examination carried out on her was yet to ready at 8:00am on Thursday when he spoke with our correspondent.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Femi Joseph said he was yet to be briefed.
Speaking in a telephone chat with newsmen in Akure over the incident, the Commander, 32 Artillery Brigade, Owena Cantonment, Akure, Brigadier-General Zakari Abubakar denied the incident and described the report as an attempt by some kidnappers in Akoko area to blackmail the soldiers.
He said it is investigating a report that its soldiers allegedly raped a student in Ikare-Akoko, Ondo state on Wednesday’s evening.
Abubakar therefore denied the involvement of his men in the rape incident, adding that anybody with complaints against soldiers deployed on the road should report at the Army Headquarters in Akure for appropriate action.
